It was my honor to conduct a face-to-face interview with Michael Dowling, president & CEO of Northwell Health (formerly North Shore-LIJ Health System), in his office in downtown Manhattan. Michael Dowling is an amazingly effective leader in so many different ways. He is also a very engaging conversationalist with an extremely interesting and diverse background. For example, how many CEOs do you know who worked on the docks early in their career?
When Michael Dowling talks, I eagerly listen and learn!
I asked Dowling for a piece of advice he would share with America’s healthcare leaders. In typical Dowling fashion, his response was immediate, specific, passionate, and powerful:
“Take care of your team. The most important assets you have in any organization are the people who come in in the morning and walk out at night.”
All healthcare leaders have heard variations of this advice throughout their entire career. Unfortunately, many nod in agreement but do not carry through with the long, hard work to truly make it happen consistently over time.
There are some outstanding examples of healthcare organizations across America whose leaders consistently focus on this crucial priority and truly take care of their people.
Unfortunately, if you are well informed, you also know that there are many healthcare organizations across America whose leaders do not live up to this important advice and standard.
Do you truly and consistently take care of your team? Not just talk about it, but actually do it? Day-in and day-out, year-in and year-out? If in doubt, ask the people whom you lead. With all due respect, if your people do not think that you take care of them, it really doesn’t matter what you think. Their perception is their reality!
Take care of your team. In turn, they will take care of your patients, your mission, and your collective short and long-term success!
