The People You Lead

In the book titled Difference: The One-Page Method for Reimagining Your Business and Reinventing Your Marketing, author Bernadette Jiwa focuses on thinking differently and being a ‘difference thinker’ in order to create totally new programs, products and services.

Much of what she writes is also directly applicable to leadership excellence. Consider these statements, found in the first chapter, from the perspective of leadership excellence:

“It isn’t the person with the best idea who wins; it’s the person who has the greatest understanding of what really matters to people.”

“You need to understand the story that people want to believe and become invested in. Because the truth is that you can’t change how people think or what they do without changing how they feel.”

“You need to create ideas and experiences that give people reasons to care and to belong, not just reasons to choose.”

I am currently writing a book that will be titled Be An Inspirational Leader: Engage, Inspire, Empower. Without a doubt, the three quotations above describe inspirational leaders and leadership excellence. Read and think about these key statements again:

  • “It’s the person who has the greatest understanding of what really matters to people.”
  • “You can’t change how people think or what they do without changing how they feel.”
  • “You need to create ideas and experiences that give people reasons to care and to belong.”

What about your leadership? Do you consistently demonstrate and teach these critical leadership perspectives and habits to the people you lead?
