September 14, 2026- Bon Secours Mercy Health has received Practice Greenhealth’s 2026 System for Change Award, recognizing the health system’s enterprise-wide approach to environmental sustainability, operational stewardship and resource management.
The award recognizes health systems that establish organization-wide sustainability goals, measure progress and collaborate across their organizations to reduce environmental impact.
One example comes from Mercy Health – St. Anne Hospital in Toledo, Ohio, where teams redesigned the facility’s nitrous oxide delivery system to reduce gas loss. Before the changes, an estimated 53% of nitrous oxide was lost through undetectable leaks. During the two years following the improvements, those losses were virtually eliminated.
Bon Secours Mercy Health is also pursuing energy-efficiency improvements through building optimization, operational changes and infrastructure investments designed to improve resource use and reduce operating costs.
The award reflects contributions from facilities operations, clinicians, supply chain leaders, sustainability teams and other associates across the organization.
“Meaningful sustainability progress requires more than individual projects. It requires a shared commitment to stewardship and collaboration,” said Miranda Jolliff, director of Waste Stream and Sustainability at Bon Secours Mercy Health.
