Take Care of Your Team

I recently had the privilege to conduct a video interview with Mark Dixon, president of The Mark Dixon Group, LLC. Dixon has had extensive experience in the healthcare industry, and because of this offers valuable insight to those within healthcare leadership. During his interview, which is featured on America’s Healthcare Leaders, Dixon offers advice on a variety of issues. One particular topic stood out to me: the importance of taking care of your team.

Healthcare is an ever-changing industry and is experiencing a major transformation that doesn’t always leave leaders with the best outlook. Organizations are constantly changing and having to do more with less, and Dixon comments that it is easy to get overwhelmed while facing these challenges and develop a negative outlook that not only affects you, but also negatively impacts your team.

A team is only as good as its leader, and it is essential for you to remain positive and focused on what you are hoping to accomplish in your organization. By doing this, you are setting up your team for success.

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.” – Zig Ziglar

Positive thinking improves your day-to-day interactions and will do much to encourage your team onward to success. While it may be easy to get lost in the negative and buried in the details, it is necessary to celebrate and acknowledge the small accomplishments and the people working to make those happen. Dixon states:

“You have to look at the people that you are working with—and there are some amazing things happening out there that people are working on—and take the time to celebrate them… Recognize great work that was done inside your health system, individuals that stepped up.”

Recognition and celebration don’t have to be grand acts, but can be something as simple as a verbal acknowledgement while walking the halls. Regardless of how you decide to show your support for your team and foster an environment of positivity and progress, you must first acknowledge that it is necessary. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple “thank you” to a team member.

You have a great responsibility as a leader to take care of your team. Your attitude and actions determine which direction your team will go. As the leader, you steer the ship, so make sure you are charting a path toward success.
