March 21, 2024- Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, Ohio, part of Cincinnati-based Bon Secours Mercy Health, uses a centralized staffing and scheduling department that sees to the scheduling needs of each of the health system’s departments. In terms of nursing shifts, this allows the hospital system to be able to ensure staffing levels are adequately met. Creative shift structures include 9am-5pm schedules, 12-hour shifts beginning at any time of the day, specific schedules for new mothers, and more flexibility on weekend shifts, according to Mercy Health and Becker’s Hospital Review. The flexible staffing schedules has helped reduce nurse turnover rates and close experiences gaps for those new to the profession.
