New project will expand ChristianaCare rehab capacity

April 7, 2026- ChristianaCare is partnering with Onix Group to build a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Newark, marking a significant step in the health system’s broader expansion strategy.

The $75 million project will span approximately 92,000 square feet and include 73 inpatient beds—nearly doubling the capacity of ChristianaCare’s current rehabilitation unit. Once complete, the facility is expected to serve roughly 1,000 additional patients each year, helping to meet rising demand for post-acute care services driven in part by an aging population.

The new hospital will replace and expand existing rehabilitation services currently housed at Wilmington Hospital. That transition is designed to do more than just increase rehab capacity—it will also free up space within Wilmington Hospital for a new step-down unit. Health system leaders say this shift will improve patient flow, reduce emergency department congestion, and better align care settings with patient acuity.

Clinically, the facility is expected to deliver a full spectrum of inpatient rehabilitation services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy, along with specialized programs for conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. Plans also call for integrating advanced rehabilitation technologies, such as exoskeleton-assisted mobility and electrical stimulation therapies, to enhance recovery outcomes.

The project is part of ChristianaCare’s larger capital investment initiative across Delaware, reflecting a growing emphasis on post-acute care as health systems look to optimize throughput and improve long-term patient outcomes.

Construction timelines have not been fully detailed, but the partnership underscores a broader trend: health systems are increasingly investing in dedicated rehabilitation infrastructure to manage capacity challenges and deliver more specialized, high-acuity recovery care.
