New study shows that Pfizer and Moderna may offer most protection for boosters

December 3, 2021 – A new study published in British journal The Lancet suggests that, even though many vaccine and booster shot combinations offer increased protection against COVID-19, the Pfizer and Moderna shots may offer the most protection for booster shots.  The results also suggest that the “mix-and-match” booster shot method also provides effective protection.

The study examined a group of people who were initially vaccinated against COVID with either the Oxford-AstraZeneca or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. The study group received a wide range of booster shots, which mostly boosted immune responses to COVID, but Pfizer and Moderna stood out from the rest.

With cases and hospitalization rates climbing again the United States, along with the confirmation of omicron variant cases, this study comes at a time when people might be holding out to get a booster shot. While there have certainly been some breakthrough cases, boosters have been proven to keep symptoms mild and reduce the risk of hospitalization.
