September 15, 2026- Atrium Health Union West has broken ground on a $116 million expansion designed to increase acute care capacity and improve access to emergency services for residents of Union and southeastern Mecklenburg counties.
The project will add more than 67,000 square feet to the Matthews, N.C., hospital, including 88 new patient rooms, 11 emergency department bays, an endoscopy room and a procedure room. The expansion also will add imaging, ancillary and support infrastructure.
Atrium Health Union West has served more than 200,000 patients since opening in February 2022, with patient visits increasing 127% as the surrounding population has grown. The new expansion is expected to open in fall 2028.
